R-2000

What is R-2000?

The R-2000 Standard was developed over 25 years ago. Since then it has continued to evolve as new information and technology has become available.

It is a program developed for new home construction. It is run by Natural Resources Canada in partnership with Canada’s residential construction industry. Locally the R-2000 program is managed by the Nova Scotia Home Builders Association.

R-2000 promotes the use of cost effective energy efficient building practices and technologies. R-2000 homes are some of the most environmentally friendly, comfortable, and state of the art homes available.

R-2000 homes boast a wealth of advantages over conventional homes. They are more efficient than currently required by building codes and use less energy than a conventional home. This energy efficiency means lower operating costs as well as less green house gas emissions that harm our environment.

R-2000 homes use environmentally friendly building material choices as well as efficient fresh air ventilation systems which translate into greater indoor air quality. R-2000 homes use less water and less energy and have an air change rate of less than 1.5 AC/H. Conventional homes generally have air change rates around 3 to 4 AC/H. This means fewer drafts in an R-2000 home. R-2000 homes are inspected and tested to ensure they meet all of the requirements of the current R-2000 Standard.

R-2000 is a voluntary program that provides better quality, comfort and energy efficiency. Only certified R-2000 builders who meet all the requirements are permitted to build R-2000 homes. All R-2000 homes are inspected and insured by third parties and then certified nationally. No other homes go through the level of quality assurance of a certified R-2000 home.
